27-YEAR-OLD MAYANN ABDOOL SET ABLAZE BY COMMON-LAW HUSBAND

A woman who was set ablaze by her common-law husband in Couva died at hospital on Tuesday 17th January 2023.

Initial story on the incident

Couva woman critical after her common-law husband claimed she lit herself afire but neighbours are not buying that story.

Details of the incident are sketchy however TSR understands that the victim has been identified as 27-year-old Mayann Abdool of Indian Trail in Couva.

She remains fighting for her life at the San Fernando General Hospital after sustaining severe burns on the body.

The woman's common-law husband Lionel Rackal reported to police that following a domestic dispute at their home on Sunday 8th January 2023, Abdool poured gasoline on herself.

She then reportedly set herself on fire and he was able to extinguish the blaze and took her to the Couva District Hospital sometime around midnight.

TSR further understands that doctors at the Couva District Hospital later contacted officers at the Couva Police Station and informed them of what Rackal reported to them when he brought Abdool in at the Accident and Emergency Department.

WPC Laloo and PC Padarath responded to the report from the Hospital and went to the facility where they saw the victim lying on a stretcher and doctors listed her condition as critical.

Abdool was treated and subsequently transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further treatment.

TSR was told that Abdool was a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Rackal who sometime during the Christmas period, "buss up" the woman's head during a dispute at their home.

Editor's note:

We trust and hope that the Couva police are investigating this incident thoroughly and not simply labeling it as "attempted suicide" given the fact that there are allegations against Rackal of being physically abusive to Abdool.

We also trust that Couva police would have ensured that Crime Scene Investigators visited the scene and seized items of evidential value shortly after receiving a report on the incident.
