As revellers enjoyed Carnival Monday, officers conducted various exercises across the nation to ensure their continued safety. This resulted in the seizure of four guns, 25 arrests, and over 50 fixed penalty notices being issued. These additional gun finds bring the total seized to nine since Friday.

An anti-crime exercise was conducted between the hours of 4 pm on Sunday 19th and 4 am on Monday 20th February, 2023 by members of the Western Division Task Force. It included road check exercises at various locations throughout the Division. Officers conducting one of these exercises, near Western Main Road, Carenage, were alerted by a passing motorist, that occupants of a dark-coloured vehicle had thrown an object out of the vehicle’s window, into a bushy area. A search was conducted, and officers found a P80 nine-millimetre firearm, loaded with a magazine containing 15 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

During an anti-crime exercise, between the hours of 9 am and 11 am yesterday, South Western Division officers responding to information regarding the arrival of a vessel near Erin Beach, proceeded to the location where they observed a man walking along the beach with a backpack on his back. Upon seeing the officers the man dropped the backpack and ran in the opposite direction. Officers pursued the suspect, but he escaped. A search of the backpack led to the discovery of a revolver with three rounds of .38 spl ammunition.

Officers attached to the Couva Criminal Investigations Department, conducted a mobile patrol in the Couva area yesterday, around 10 am. While proceeding along Market Street, they observed a man place an object in a bushy area and cover it with a black and white bandana. The suspect, upon seeing the police vehicle, ran in a westerly direction. One of the officers alighted from the vehicle in pursuit of the man, however, he escaped into the crowd at the J’ouvert celebrations on Southern Main Road. A search of the area where the object was placed, resulted in the discovery of a Ruger P95DC fitted with a magazine containing 10 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

North Eastern Division officers conducted an anti-crime exercise in Santa Cruz between 7 pm and 11 pm yesterday. During the exercise, they proceeded to a track along Blackford Street where they observed a group of men, who dispersed as they approached. The officers searched the area and discovered a Glock 22 pistol with a loaded magazine and three rounds of 40-calibre ammunition.

Exercises across the Divisions yesterday also led to the arrest of 25 persons for various offences including Possession of an Offensive Weapon, Driving Under the Influence, and Disorderly Behaviour, among others.
