Police Seize Firearms, Ammunition, Marijuana, Monkeys and Macaws
Police officers seized a variety of illegal items, ranging from firearms, ammunition, marijuana, monkeys and macaws during several anti-crime exercises conducted in various policing divisions, over the past 36 hours.
In one incident, a party of officers from the Central Division gathered intelligence, then proceeded to a children’s/family entertainment centre, located at Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas, yesterday. A 22-year-old man, who is known to the police, was suspected of being in possession of a firearm at the business place. Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspect, approached him, identified themselves and escorted him out of the establishment in the presence his girlfriend and his child.
When the officers searched the man, they found one black Glock 17 nine millimetre pistol, with a gold coloured firearm selector outfitted with one magazine, loaded with 17 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, hidden in in his crotch area. The suspect was arrested and conveyed to the Central Division Task Force Base Area North to be processed and formally charged for the offence Possession of Firearm and Possession of Ammunition.
Between 9.15pm yesterday and 1 am this morning, Eastern Division officers conducted a roving road check and drug block exercise in the Biche district. While searching a bushy area at Lewis Trace, Poole Village, Biche, the officers found one homemade shotgun. The officers took possession of the firearm, and PC Albert is continuing enquiries.
Western Division Task Force officers proceeded to Simeon Road, Petit Valley yesterday, where searches were conducted along riverbanks, abandoned structures and bushy areas. When searching an area along a riverbank at an area known as ‘Thousand Steps’, a black plastic bag containing 100 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, one green-coloured ballistic helmet, knee pads, and three blue swivel lights were found and seized. PC Rogers is continuing enquiries.
Several search warrants were executed during a firearms and narcotics removal exercise in the Southern Division on Wednesday 8th February. However, the search for firearms led to the discovery of two capuchin monkeys, four blue and gold macaws, and 36 Amazon yellow crown parrots, held in captivity without permits.
A 36-year-old man was arrested and charged by a Game Warden for having the animals in captivity without the required permits.
Meanwhile in Tobago, officers attached to the Moriah Police Station proceeded to a semi forested area in Castara yesterday, in search of a suspect wanted in the district. While there, the officers discovered a marijuana field, which consisted of 844 trees and 250 seedlings. A short distance away another marijuana field was observed which contained approximately 300 trees. The marijuana was harvested and destroyed.
Investigations are continuing into the matter.
